Commandment 1: You shall have no other gods before me.

Commandment 2: You shall not make for yourself an idol

Commandment 3: You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God

Commandment 4: Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy

Commandment 5: Honor your father and mother

Commandment 6: You shall not murder

Commandment 7: You shall not commit adultery

Commandment 8: You shall not steal

Commandment 9: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

The Ten Commandments

The first Biblical text to refer the commandments are found in Chapter 20 of the Book of Exodus in which they are spoken by God to Moses for the Children of Israel.

The Ten Commandments and the Tablets of Stone
The Ten Commandments were written by the hand of God in stone, in the form of two stone tablets known as the Tablets of Stone. Exodus 31:18 refers to the tablets containing the Ten Commandments as the "Tablets of Testimony" because they give insight into the nature of God. According to the Bible, there were two sets of the Ten Commandments. The first Ten Commandments, inscribed by God, were smashed by Moses when he was enraged by the sight of the Children of Israel worshiping the Golden Calf (Exodus 32:4) and the second set of the Ten Commandments were later cut by Moses and rewritten by God.
